Wine Cellars FAQs
How do I store wine?
The most important factor in storing wine or when building a wine cellar
is to keep a controlled environment. First, the area should be kept
cool. 55 degrees is the standard temperature for storing wine. The area
should be at about 70% humidity in order to keep wine from prematurely
aging. Finally, the area should be free from vibrations, high traffic
and any high exposure to light (specifically fluorescent).
How do I begin building my wine selection?
Always rely on your taste buds when it comes to wine selection. Each
wine collection will be unique. There are no standard wine brands or
types required. However, don’t be surprised when your tastes change
to include heavier or lighter wines. Also: Remember to build your storage
or cellar in anticipation of adding more wine.
How do I maintain my wine storage or wine cellar?
The most important factor in maintaining a wine storage or cellar is
to keep inventory. Avoid disturbing wine bottles as much as possible
in order to keep wine from being compromised. With each turn of the
bottle or removal from its space on the rack, wine can begin to separate
or disturb sediment imbalance. Use wine tags, label shelves or keep
a hand-written inventory or database to avoid disruption.
